Well folks I don’t know what’s in the krill those Humpbacks are eating but it is sure making them do back flips! Check out the wonderful video on the Yankee Fleet Face book site; made by a customer on our August 5th whale watch! Thanks Jeannie for sharing; great video!!!!!
Sightings over the past few days have included breaching, bubble feeding and tail slapping Humpbacks. Minkies and finbackshave been hanging out just a few miles off-shore along with some white sided dolphins playing in the mix!

Here are some great photos and comments from our Naturalist Steve!!

Pictures taken on Wednesday, August 3rd’s Whale Watching trip!!

Whale Watches run daily and depart at 1:30pm on Weekdays and 2:30pm on Weekends!!

We have been traveling much further then we normally like to go, however the activity level of the whales has been well worth the extra time it takes to get to the whales. We consistently have been seeing big concentrations of whales but the real payoff has not been the numbers of whales in the area, but rather the exciting behavior we have been seeing. There has been lots of feeding going on and with that we have had open mouth feeding very close to the boat, flipper slapping and tail slapping, breaching and tail breaching.
These have been some of the best encounters we have had all year and it does not seem to be stopping. One passenger said to me, ” If I had your job, I could not handle seeing this much excitement everyday”. People have been having the best time. (Written by Steve)

Head of a Humpback

Fluke #1
Whale watching in July has been overall good. Heading to areas not usual for this time of season, trips have produced sightings of some humpback, finwhales and minke whales.
These are photos of whales seen during the month of July!

Open Mouth Feeding
Whales are in this area to feed. The whales push the food to the surface where they will then filter out the water and in the food.

Open Mouth Feeding #2

Fluke #2
Whales often dive deep which is when we see views like this of their flukes or tails.
Photos taken by our naturalist Steven Morello. Steven has also added an interesting twist to our whale watches this season. He is offering a photo workshop on Tuesday whale watches throughout the season.

Special Whale Photo Workshop
Ever wonder what our crew does in the off season? Well here at Yankee Fleet we are very fortunate to have lots of very special people working with us and we like to make the talent available to our equally special guests.
Steve Morello is one of our naturalists and he is a highly celebrated photographer who teaches photo workshops both at his home and on wildlife adventure around the world. You can visit www.stevemorello.com to see some of his work. Author of the book ”The Traveling Nature Photographer” Steve has been photographing wildlife for more than twenty-five years. His work has appeared in National Geographic Magazines and books, National Geographic World Magazine, International Wildlife, The New York Times Martha Stuart’s Living, Popular Photography, and Outdoor Photographer as well as numerous other magazines, books and calendars. In an effort to utilize his expertise we are offering a special Whale Photo Workshop on whale watching trips, departing on Tuesdays through the whale watching season. This photo workshop will begin with a one-hour workshop session at the restaurant Latitude 43 right next to our vessel, the Yankee Freedom. We will continue the days event on board the Yankee Freedom for an afternoon of exciting whale watching and photography. Steve will be on deck to give advice and tips on how to capture the best photographs of the whales and other wildlife we may encounter. As a special bonus, participants will be offered a 50% discount on our program to view the Gloucester Schooner Festival, Mayor’s Race. This race is held September 2nd through the 5th every year. There you will have the chance to photograph some of the classic old time Cape Ann Schooners and other large sailing vessels. So come join us for an adventurous whale watch and the opportunity to learn more about photographing the natural world.

Yankee Fleet is excited to introduce Steve Morello to their research staff for 2011. He has an amazing background and is excited to share his knowledge with us at Yankee Fleet as well as our whale watch participants. Steve has been guiding wildlife adventures for more than twenty years. His career in wildlife started doing research on whales in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He soon found that guiding on local whale watching boats brought him to his passion, of bringing people to see wildlife and teaching them about the wonders of nature. For the next fifteen years he lead whale watching tours, became an instructor at the National Audubon Society Audubon Camps in Maine, and was the Director of Education at West Quoddy Marine Biological Research Station in Maine.
In 1989 he was one of the founders of Natural Habitat Adventures. As Field Director for Nat Hab, Steve was responsible for the creation of their guide-training program and was the driving force behind Natural Habitat’s policies in the destinations they traveled to. Steve also initiated the partnership between Natural Habitat and World Wildlife Fund.
In 2004 Steve decided that he wanted to play a more active role in sustainable tourism, and to operate tours that were unique and made partners of the local people in the places he traveled to. He founded Green Planet Expeditions as a sister company to Mondo Verde Expeditions, and concentrated on custom photo tours, where his philosophy of “Leaving More Than Footprints” was a main component of his programs. During this time, Steve participated in and developed guide training programs in Peru, Tanzania, and the United States.
Now Green Planet and Mondo Verde expeditions are one entity and along with the Mondo Verde Team, Steve continues his development of responsible travel programs around the world.
Steve is one of the worlds most traveled and experienced guides, with a list of destinations he has visited that reads like a world atlas. His abilities have made him a guide of choice for such prestigious organizations as American Museum of Natural History, National Wildlife federation, World Wildlife Fund, and the Smithsonian Museum.
Well known as a professional wildlife photographer, Steve’s work has appeared in National Geographic, International Wildlife, The New York Times and Outdoor Photographer as well as numerous other magazines, books and calendars. Steve is a major contributor to the photo collection of the World Wildlife Fund and frequently works with scientists around the world documenting their research and gaining first-hand knowledge of the animals and ecosystems he photographs. Author of the book “The Traveling Nature Photographer” Steve also teaches photo workshops privately at his home in Massachusetts, and on our Photo-Tours to destinations around the world.
On a seperate note Steve has put together a mini photo workshop that will be available on Tuesday afternoon whale watches. We will meet at the restaurant Latitude 43 in the comfort of their outdoor seating area, right next to the Yankee Freedom. Steve will discuss the tricks of photographing on a boat. Composition, exposure, and how to ell a story with your images are just a few of the topics we will discuss. We will learn how to choose the right lens, capture the action that we often encounter out on our whale watches and also learn some of the basics of digital photography, like how to use your histogram. Steve has photographed whales all over the world and he will go over his choice of equipment for photographing whales and answer any of your questions you may have about wildlife photography. Our mini photo workshop will be sure to enhance your photographic endeavors and help you get the most out of documenting your adventure.
